Eric Cornell Update
Nobel laureate Eric Cornell and his wife, Celeste Landry, met with
the media on April 12 to discuss his recovery from necrotizing fasciitis.
Cornell is a research physicist and fellow at the National Institute
of Standards and Technology and adjoint professor of physics at the
University of Colorado at Boulder.
Necrotizing fasciitis, caused by the bacteria that causes strep throat,
is a serious illness that caused Cornell to be hospitalized at the end
of October, 2004. He was discharged from the hospital on Dec. 16, 2004,
and has been undergoing rehabilitation and recovery since then.
Cornell and Carl Wieman, distinguished professor of physics at CU-Boulder,
led a team of physicists that created the world's first Bose-Einstein
condensate in 1995. They were awarded the Nobel
Prize in physics in 2001 for their creation of the new form of matter.
