Professor Ward Churchill
Employment Chronology, Salary Information
July 2007

  • Ward Churchill was hired in 1978 as assistant director of CU-Boulder’s American Indian Equal Opportunities Program.  He held the position of acting director in 1980-81, associate director in 1981-82, and acting director in 1982-83.  American Indian EOP offered counseling and other services to American Indian students.  He was director of the Educational Development Program from 1983-89 and was director of the University Learning Center from 1989 to 1991.
  • Churchill became a tenured faculty member in the communication department in 1991 for the 1991-92 academic year.  Professor Churchill transferred to the ethnic studies department in April 1997.
  • In 2002, Professor Churchill became chair of the ethnic studies department.  He held the post until his resignation in January 2005.
  • In February 2005 a review team examined issues concerning Professor Churchill’s work.  The review team determined that Professor Churchill’s essay on 9/11, and other public comments, were protected by the First Amendment.  However, allegations of plagiarism, misuse of others’ work and fabrication, which could constitute research misconduct, were referred to the Standing Committee on Research Misconduct for investigation following established university procedures.  (See the following site for more information: http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2005/49.html.
  • The Standing Committee on Research Misconduct announced in September 2005 that some of the allegations of research misconduct should be referred for further investigation including: alleged instances of plagiarism, misuse of others' work, falsification and fabrication of authority.  These allegations remained unchanged from the time of referral by the interim chancellor.  Some allegations were not appropriate for investigation and some were not considered (for details go to: http://www.colorado.edu/news/reports/churchill/standingcommittee.html).
An Investigative Committee was appointed in fall 2005 to review the allegations.  In May 2006 the Investigative Committee report was released.  See the following site for details: http://www.colorado.edu/news/reports/churchill/download/factsheet.pdf.
On June 26, 2006, Acting Chancellor Phil DiStefano issued to Professor Churchill a notice of intent to dismiss him from his faculty position at CU-Boulder, triggering a process that is governed by Regents Law, Article 5.C.1 and 2, and Regents Policy 5-I. See: http://www.colorado.edu/news/reports/churchill/churchill062606.html.
In June 2006 Professor Churchill appealed the decision to CU's faculty Privilege and Tenure Committee.
  • In January 2007, the Privilege and Tenure Committee heard Professor Churchill’s appeal and later sent a report to CU President Hank Brown.
  • In June 2007 President Brown reviewed the hearing panel’s report and responded by informing the panel that he intended to recommend that the Board of Regents terminate Professor Churchill.  The panel did not modify its report after being informed of President Brown’s recommendation, which President Brown then forwarded to the Board of Regents in June 2007.  The Board of Regents notified Professor Churchill of the recommendation on June 7, 2007.
  • Professor Churchill requested a hearing before the Board of Regents.  The hearing occurred in executive session.  After the hearing was completed, the Board of Regents took final action in an open meeting.
