Statement By Ron Stump, Vice Chancellor For Student Affairs
Oct. 31, 2004
We are extremely disturbed by the riotous behavior of students
and others on the Hill area in the early morning of Oct. 31. Halloween
celebrations are no excuse for endangering the health, safety and
property of others. As we reminded students again this fall, any
CU-Boulder students found to have engaged in such behavior face
serious consequences, both from the criminal justice system and
the University's judicial affairs system.
According to state law that took effect in June 2002, college
students convicted of rioting offenses will be prohibited from
attending any state-supported college or university for one year.
In
addition to the legal system, students involved in riots face
disciplinary action through the university's Office of Judicial
Affairs, ranging from probation to suspension and expulsion. Bystanders
also are subject to sanctions, if they do not comply with police
orders to disperse from riot or crowd situations.
We will not tolerate behavior that threatens the health and safety
of others. Working with law enforcement agencies, the university
will take action through all appropriate legal and disciplinary
avenues.
