Professor Robert S. Anderson of the University of Colorado Boulder’s geological sciences department and Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research has been awarded the 2014 Hazel Barnes Prize, the most distinguished award a faculty member can receive from the university.

Lucien Castaing-Taylor, a professor of anthropology at Harvard University who previously taught at CU-Boulder, will present and discuss his award-winning documentary “Leviathan” on Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. in room E-50 of the Muenzinger building. 



Academy Award winner Alex Gibney will screen his 2013 documentary “We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks” on Monday, May 5, at 7 p.m. in room 102 of the ATLAS building. Both screenings are free and open to the public.

CU system news release

DENVER – Three faculty members from across the University of Colorado system have been named 2014 President’s Teaching Scholars, each recognized as an educator who skillfully integrates teaching and research at an exceptional level.

The title of President’s Teaching Scholar signifies CU’s highest recognition of excellence in and commitment to learning and teaching, as well as active, substantial contributions to scholarly work. CU President Bruce D. Benson solicits annual nominations of faculty for the designation, which is a lifetime appointment.

Continued employment expansion in Colorado in the first half of 2014 is signaled in a quarterly report released today by Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler and prepared by the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business.

“Coloradans continue to persevere and show their can-do spirit by pursuing the American dream,” said Gessler. “As these business leaders create jobs, hopefully our employment continues to tick upwards.”

Jordan Burns, a University of Colorado Boulder junior majoring in civil engineering, has won a prestigious Truman Scholarship, an honor that brings with it up to $30,000 for graduate study. Burns, who is from Colorado Springs, is CU-Boulder’s ninth recipient of the scholarship and first since 2006.

Byron Chrisman (’66), perhaps one of the University of Colorado Boulder Law School’s most unlikely success stories, attributes his success as a tax attorney and real estate developer to his experience at Colorado Law.

Now he and his wife, Carlene, have committed a $10 million bequest to endow the Byron and Carlene Chrisman Chairs in Free Enterprise at Colorado Law. When realized upon their passing, this estate gift will be the largest cash gift in the history of Colorado Law.

The Rocky Mountain Lighting Academy (RMLA) will offer a one-of-a-kind immersive educational opportunity for lighting professionals this summer at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The RMLA’s Summer Lighting Course is scheduled for June 23-27 on the CU-Boulder campus. The course will present the theory of lighting within a practical context, making it directly applicable to the needs of those working in engineering, product development and technical sales positions.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will give a free public talk at the University of Colorado Boulder April 18 on America’s space program and the challenges and opportunities the space agency will encounter as it moves through the 21st century.

The talk, titled “NASA’s Roadmap to Tomorrow’s Missions,” will be held at CU-Boulder’s East Stadium Club on the east side of Folsom Field from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
