There's more to using a rebate than merely saving a few cents, a new study of shoppers reports.

People who are willing to spend extra time and effort sending in a rebate will tend to believe the product they are getting is pretty swell, says Donald Lichtenstein, a marketing professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

But when shoppers respond to advertised sales, they are less likely to attribute high quality to the brand. Why?

The following statement was issued this morning by University of Colorado President John C. Buechner.

“First of all, I want to say I am very satisfied with the thorough planning and organization undertaken by the Boulder campus community for the visit of chancellor candidate Dr. John Moseley. Over the last three days, constituent groups from every sector of the campus community have had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Moseley at length, and I am told that these meetings have been productive and informative.

The top business plans of aspiring student entrepreneurs at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be judged by a panel of local executives April 30 in the spring Business Plan Competition.

The spring semester event is the climax of a class taught by Juan Rodriguez, professor of electrical and computer engineering and chairman of Ecrix Corp., and instructor Mike Befeler, a principal and founder of Storage Systems Marketing Inc. Rodriguez is a co-founder of both Storage Technology Corp. and Exabyte Corp.

The unique partnership involving industry and foundations in CU-Boulder’s new $17 million Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory may be a harbinger of similar collaborations around the nation, according to engineering Dean Ross Corotis.

“Industry has not traditionally been involved in the educational process of engineers,” said Corotis. “But I think the overwhelming support we have received on this project is a signal the private sector is acknowledging their stake in the quality of engineering education.”
