Back to Boulder Homecoming Weekend to offer activities and events Oct. 24-27

A huge range of activities will be offered during the University of Colorado’s 2013 Back to Boulder Homecoming Weekend Oct. 24-27 for alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members.

A full description of activities and events as well as event registration can be found on the Back to Boulder website at http://alumni.colorado.edu/backtoboulder.

The weekend kicks off Thursday, Oct. 24, at 5:45 p.m. with the 84th Annual Alumni Association Awards Ceremony at the Hotel Boulderado. The ceremony is one of the university’s longest standing traditions and is a chance to celebrate the outstanding service and professional achievements of 10 of CU-Boulder’s most outstanding alumni, faculty, staff and students. Registration is required for the event.

Four experts from the ski industry will be featured at a panel discussion during the Back to Boulder Luncheon in Folsom Field’s club level on Friday, Oct. 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The $15 cost includes lunch and the chance to hear from legendary extreme skier Chris Davenport (Hist’93), the first person to ski all 54 of Colorado’s 14ers in one year and who has been featured in more than 30 films from Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions, Vail Mountain COO Chris Jarnot (Bus’89), head CU ski coach Richard Rokos and CU freestyle ski coach Palmer Hoyt (Fin’05). The event is free for students. Registration is required.

For those looking for a classroom experience, select professors in CU-Boulder’s colleges and schools will open their classrooms for “Classes Without Quizzes.” Throughout Friday, registered participants will be able to sit in on classes and listen to lectures. Tours of campus, including a tour of CU-Boulder’s new buildings and the renovated Fiske Planetarium, also will be available for Homecoming Weekend attendees.

After the complimentary Buff Bash at the Lazy Dog on Pearl Street for alumni and their friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the evening will end with the celebratory Pearl Street Stampede. The entire Boulder community is invited for the procession along the Pearl Street Mall, which includes the Golden Buffalo Marching Band and representatives from the CU football team. The free event begins in front of the Boulder County Courthouse at 7 p.m. and ends with a pep rally at 11th and Pearl.

Several reunions will occur during the festivities. The class of 1963 and the Golden Anniversary Club will meet Friday evening in the Folsom Field club level for a special dinner and program. Other groups holding individual reunion activities include the First Fives (those who graduated with the classes of 2009-13), the law school class of 1993, the Spirit Squad, the Black Alumni Association, the American Indian Alumni Association, the Leeds MBA classes of 1993 and 1998, the Latino Alumni Association, Herd leaders, the President’s Leadership Council and the CU club freestyle team.

Connecting with game day tradition, the Homecoming parade begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, on University Hill. The procession will start at The Sink and will end at the University Memorial Center on CU’s campus. Fans are invited to line up along the route and see the floats, marchers and other entries from campus Greek organizations, residence halls, student groups and more. Ceal Barry, associate athletics director, will serve as the parade’s grand marshal and the theme for the parade will celebrate “Colorado Pride.”

On Saturday afternoon, attendees can make their way to the Alumni Association’s pregame event, Ralphie’s Corral, a family-friendly event hosted on Benson Field, across from Folsom Field. Opening at 3 p.m., the event includes performances from the CU marching band and spirit team, a family fun zone, concession and merchandise sales and an extended appearance from Ralphie the buffalo.

This year’s CU football matchup features the Colorado Buffaloes taking on the University of Arizona Wildcats at 6 p.m. at Folsom Field. Game day information can be found at http://cubuffs.com/gameday.
