CU-Boulder to Celebrate International Education Week Nov. 16-20

November 11, 2009

The University of Colorado at Boulder will offer ethnic dishes and host a variety of cultural and informational events Nov. 16-20 as part of International Education Week.

The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education created International Education Week as a way to recognize the benefits of international education programs such as studying abroad.

"Studying abroad teaches you flexibility and adaptability that can be used everywhere and anywhere," said Kirstin Bebell, co-chair of the International Education Week committee at CU.

Students who are interested in CU's Study Abroad Programs can visit a table in the University Memorial Center all week to ask questions and explore different options. Information also is available at studyabroad.colorado.edu/.

"Inbound students and scholars who come from overseas can bring a level of international diversity to Colorado that students might otherwise not have exposure to," said Bebell. "Outbound students like those going abroad will learn about another culture and can bring that knowledge back when they return."

Other International Education Week events include:

On Monday, Nov. 16, a panel discussion on the "Insider and Outsider Perceptions of Islam and Muslims in Today's World" will be held from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. in Hellems Arts and Sciences Building room 252. CU Professor Emeritus Frederick Denny of the religious studies department will moderate a panel comprised of CU-Boulder international and U.S. students.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, the Center for Asian Studies is sponsoring a talk by Professor Takada Yasunari of the University of Tokyo on "The Culture of ‘Here and Now' and Its Dilemmas and Potentialities" from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Norlin Library room S421.

Also on Nov. 17, the Office of International Education will host an awards ceremony and reception in the British Studies Room on the fifth floor of Norlin Library from 5 to 7 p.m. The ceremony will announce the winners of a photography contest showcasing pictures taken during student travels in addition to identifying Boulder's "Global Citizens" and "Champions of International Education." All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the event.

A variety of international food including European, African, Latin American, Middle Eastern and Asian will be available in the UMC's Tabor Grill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day of International Education Week.

Housing and Dining Services also will serve a menu of international food in campus residence halls during dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
