"Extraordinary art from ordinary fluids" is the way Jean Hertzberg describes the first assignment to 20 students in her interdisciplinary course, "Flow Visualization: The Physics & Art of Fluid Flow," at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Students in the class photographed such things as cream dropping into hot tea, smoke generated by blowing out candles, and a gasoline-diesel mixture burning on top of water, among other physical phenomena.
Associate Professor Kevin Welner of the University of Colorado at Boulder's School of Education has been awarded the 2006 Early Career Award from the American Educational Research Association.
The 25,000-member organization honored Welner for his research on education policy. The award recognizes "a scholar's distinguished portfolio of cumulative education research within the first decade after receiving a doctoral degree."
University of Colorado at Boulder senior Megan Silbert has been named the state's Student Employee of the Year.
The 22-year-old communications major received a $75 gift certificate to the CU Book Store, a plaque and $50 cash award, and had a luncheon with Vice Chancellor Ron Stump on April 13. Silbert was selected from a pool of nominated students at all of Colorado's state colleges and universities.
Silbert has worked for CU Science Discovery, the university's K-12 science outreach program, her entire college career including full time in the summer.

Administrators at the University of Colorado at Boulder have reached an agreement with a student group regarding university support for a proposal on a Designated Suppliers Program and will explain the agreement in a news briefing today at 4:30 p.m. on the south terrace of the University Memorial Center.
Vice Chancellor for Administration Paul Tabolt and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Ron Stump will represent the CU-Boulder administration at the briefing.
After several years of funding delays, the increasingly crowded building housing the University of Colorado at Boulder's Leeds School of Business will close May 12 for a yearlong $33.3 million renovation and expansion project.
Leeds School classes and offices will move to various temporary locations for the summer and into the Fleming Law Building from fall 2006 through summer 2007.
Originally designed to serve 1,400 students when it opened in spring 1970, the building currently serves more than twice that number, about 3,600 students.

Middle and high school students from across Colorado will descend on the University of Colorado at Boulder April 28 for an event demonstrating that energy conservation can start at any age.
Bringing 150 students from 25 schools for what may be Colorado's largest energy education event of the year, the Colorado Energy Science Center's 2006 Home Energy Investigation Contest will showcase the students' findings from their investigation of the homes of their family and friends, and their recommendations for improving energy efficiency.
More than 180 eighth-graders from Boulder's Southern Hills Middle School will visit the University of Colorado at Boulder on Friday, April 28, for an excursion involving lab tours, talks, science games and a field trip along Boulder Creek.
The students will be hosted by CU-Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research and the National Snow and Ice Data Center on the university's East Campus. The students will be at CU-Boulder from about 9 a.m. to noon.
Philip P. DiStefano, interim chancellor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, is taking himself out of consideration for appointment as permanent chancellor, saying "it is the right decision for the overall good of the university."
Hundreds of Colorado middle and high school students will be on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus Saturday, April 29, to compete in Colorado History Day.
About 600 students in grades six through 12 will compete in the event, which is part of the largest national humanities education program in the country. The event is free and open to the public and will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center and other campus locations.
