Statement From The Family Of Eric Cornell
Nov. 11, 2004

An Update on Eric Cornell's Condition

"Eric continues to be hospitalized. He is making slow progress. The necrotizing fasciitis bacteria appear to be eradicated from Eric's body. His left arm and shoulder were amputated in the process of combating the disease. Eric is right-handed. Due to the large wound that Eric has, he will continue to be in critical conditionfor some time.

"Eric has recently had brief moments of alertness, but mostly he remains asleep or sedated while his body works on the important job of healing. He has now made six visits to the operating room and will need more reconstructive surgery in the future. He has undergone various other medical procedures and has regular tests to monitor his condition, including hourly blood tests. His vital signs are monitored continuously as is common for people in critical condition.

"Additionally, we would like to request that the news media refrain from calling necrotizing fasciitis a "flesh-eating disease." This sensational expression unnecessarily personifies this disease - a bacterium has no mouth - and causes an emotional response in people receiving the message. This is a time when our family could use less sensationalism and more composure. We would prefer that the news media refer to this disease as a rapidly-acting infection which kills tissue.

"We appreciate the news media's patience in covering Eric's illness and recovery. We request that members of the news media continue to respect Eric's privacy and the privacy of his family, colleagues and friends. We will continue to provide updates as Eric's situation warrants."
