Job demand for CU graduates up

Sept. 24, 2012                        Lisa Severy

While national job numbers are down compared to before the recession, according to Lisa Severy, director of CU-Boulder’s Career Services office, demand for University of Colorado Boulder graduates is up, even outpacing pre-recession numbers in 2006.

CUT 1 “Our full time postings are actually 28 percent higher now then they were before the recession hit. And our internships have doubled since then. (:11) And when you look at it all collectively, including part-time jobs and seasonal work and contract type employment, we are up 37 percent from where we were before the recession.” (:22)

Severy says one of the reasons for the increase is that the jobs being created today are tailored to college graduates.

CUT 2 “Everybody talks about job creation, well the jobs that are being created are very well suited for new college graduates. For example, one of the ones we posted most last year was social media specialist. And that is a job category I don’t even think we had ten years ago. (:17) College graduates right now have been using Facebook forever. It’s part of their native language, and so they’re particularly suited for that type of job.” (:26)

Aside from social media and technical kinds of jobs like aerospace engineering, Severy says recruiters are attracted to college grads because they can adapt and are trainable.

CUT 3 “They are looking for candidates that are in an education mode. So if you’re working for a company that is selling a product they want you to be in that information soaking in stage. (:10) They’re looking for that level of enthusiasm, people who have done well in school so they know that they’re trainable.” (:17)

For students graduating in December or next May, Severy recommends starting early and using all the tools at their disposal when it comes to the job search.
