Before you leave town: Winter break reminders

December 17, 2012

With winter break quickly approaching, please take a moment to review some reminders.

On-campus residents

The residence halls will close on Friday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. for the fall semester. Students will not have access to their rooms again until 10 a.m. on Jan. 9, 2013. Remove any valuables from your room, and remember to take airline tickets, clothes, skis/snowboards, passports, medicine and other items you will need during the break.

All residents must complete the following to prepare their rooms for the break:

  • Close and lock windows
  • Close drapes
  • Unplug all electrical appliances
  • Clean and set micro-fridges to low
  • Set heat on low
  • Remove all trash from the building
  • Turn lights off
  • Lock your room door

Residents should complete these items, initial the Fall Semester Closing Checklist for Residents, and post it on the room door upon leaving for the semester break. Contact your RA if you have not received a checklist. The Housing & Dining Services contract states that residents must vacate their room no later than 24 hours after their last final. For additional information visit http://housing.colorado.edu/node/5489. For dining hours during winter break visit http://housing.colorado.edu/node/9172.

Off-campus residents

  • Ask a friend or neighbor to watch your property while you are away.
  • Before you leave, find someone willing to clear snow off your property. Snow must be removed within 24 hours of a snow fall. (For winter tips and snow removal information visit the City of Boulder.
  • Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and/or any trash in your yard.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Move any expensive items like laptops away from windows where they may be visible.  (Student rentals are often targeted over break. Leave a light on outside and use a broomstick or wooden pole to secure sliding doors and windows. It’s always a good idea to tell your neighbors you are leaving and ask them to keep their eye open for suspicious activity.)
  • Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature -- about 60 degrees.
  • Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.

Have a safe break!
