Usage is up at expanded Recreation Center

Want to know what students think about the newly renovated Student Recreation Center? Look no further than numbers and tweets.

Usage for opening week has doubled since the fall, up to around 5,000 students a day, and the reaction on Twitter has been positive: “CU's new Rec center. I'm speechless,” “@CUBoulder the new rec center is the most beautiful thing on this planet and I'm never leaving” and “going to hoop at the new @CUBoulderRec when it opens at 9. Hands down coolest courts I've ever seen.”

The southwest expansion provides an additional 83,000 square feet of indoor recreational space and includes a three-level weight and cardio area; three new wood floor all-purpose indoor courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton; a climbing wall and bouldering area; three fitness studios; wellness suites; new locker rooms and a spacious entrance and lobby.

The new ice rink opened in November and the Rental and Resource Center, which will rent camping and outdoor equipment, opens in mid-February. The final phase of the project, which consists of an indoor turf field, tennis courts, outdoor pool and the renovation of the existing basketball courts, is on track for completion in April.

"Students I've talked to are overwhelmingly happy and impressed with the space," said CU Student Government tri-executive Chris Schaefbauer (pictured above), who has been involved with project meetings and reviewing plans. "Student leaders surveyed CU students to find out what amenities they wanted and It's exciting to finally open the doors after five plus years of work."

The renovation was managed by the campus Office of Planning, Design and Construction and Recreation Center staff, but student leaders have been involved from first initiating plans for a renovation five years ago to attending weekly project meetings.

"I've loved being involved in the project and seeing all of the intricacies required to make something like this happen," he said.
