Team that planned torch relay across Russia is led by CU alum

The Olympic torch will arrive in Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics after a 123-day relay across Russia, and the team that planned the torch relay is led by a CU-Boulder alumnus with a particular passion and worldwide renown for this work.

Steven McCarthy, chairman and CEO of Louisville-based Além International Management, has worked in the event-management, hospitality and economic-development industry for more than three decades.

McCarthy graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in international affairs and has been involved with every Olympic Games and torch relay since 1996.

For the Sochi torch relay, Além has sought to “bring the Olympic spirit to communities across the vast expanse of Russia,” his company’s website states.

Além has helped to develop the scope and budget of the relay, to plan and execute the project across Russia. The relay’s national partner, Ingosstrakh Insurance, hired Além to create, plan and execute the company’s sponsorship of the relay.

“You can change the way the rest of the world sees your country and culture in a single captured image of the Olympic flame passing through your streets,” McCarthy told the Coloradan alumni magazine last year.

“We’ll show you Russia; its resilience, romance, progress, initiative and entrepreneurship,” he added.
