CU Police encouraging bike safety, giving away free U-locks

September 11, 2012

Bike theft continues to be the No. 1 crime on campus, and the CU-Boulder Police Department is asking for help to deter thieves. Just last week, a suspicious man was spotted near the Center for Community bike racks with bolt cutters, likely looking to cut weak cable locks. Don’t become a target.

Tools to defer bike thefts include:

  • Register your bicycle at the CU Bike Station, located east of the University Memorial Center. A registration sticker will be affixed to your frame, and your bike’s serial number will be recorded. If it’s stolen and later located anywhere in the United States, you’ll have a better chance of it being returned to you.
  • Use a high-quality U-lock. They are more difficult to defeat than cable locks.

As part of their bike theft prevention effort, the CU-Boulder Police Department is giving away 10 free Kryptonite bike U-locks and two bike light packages. Here’s how to win one of the free U-locks:

  • Follow the recently launched CU-Boulder Police social media pages, which include crime alerts, crime prevention tips and other safety information.
  • Go to Facebook and "like" the page and leave a comment on the U-lock giveaway post and say why bike safety is important to you.
  • Visit Twitter: www.twitter.com/CUBoulderPolice, and follow the CU-Boulder Police Department and send a tweet with @CUBoulderPolice in the message and say why bike safety is important to you.
  • You must be a current CU-Boulder student. The contest ends at 11 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12. Winners will be notified by the police deparment.
  • Five random winners will be chosen from both Facebook and Twitter. Two of them will also receive a bike light combo (front white light and rear flashing red light). Remember, state law requires the use of a white front light and rear reflector at night. This is important for your safety and that of others.
