What is CU-Boulder’s policy currently
on treatment of applications
from prospective minority applicants?
Read policy
How long has the policy been in effect?
Since 1997
Who administers the policy?
• Admissions officers
• Faculty admissions committees (graduate admissions only)
Does the same policy apply to applicants for admission and applicants for
financial aid?
The CU-Boulder Office of Financial Aid supports the enrollment goals of the
institution by providing the greatest possible level of access to all qualified
students, and by supporting the development of a diverse student body. Directors
within the Office of Financial Aid often include input from staff and faculty
representatives in the selection process.
Has the CU-Boulder policy ever been
legally challenged?
No, the 1997 policy has never been legally challenged. It is based on the
current state of the law and is fully legally compliant. How will the court’s
decision affect future recruiting practices at CU-Boulder?
We don't know yet. We have, and will continue to, promote diversity on our
campus within legal guidelines and we will review our current policy based
on the Supreme Court's decision and revise it as needed. Why does CU-Boulder
want a diverse student body?
We believe that diversity is essential to the educational mission of the
University of Colorado at Boulder and that a diverse student body is a vital
element of
academic excellence. Interaction among students with varied backgrounds,
talents, and achievements in classrooms, laboratories, residences, and extracurricular
activities contributes in important ways to learning and to preparation for
successful careers. Students who learn in diverse classrooms take that understanding
into America's businesses, government institutions and communities. Corporations,
civic and government leaders have a vested interest in our ability to attract
and retain a highly qualified and richly diverse student body that will produce
the leaders of our global society.
