Opera at CU

CU Opera program has received a "Program of Excellence Award "for the Colorado commission on Higher Education. This prestigious award is based on the quality of students, faculty and placement of those students in the professional world after graduation.

CU Opera offers at least four fully staged productions each year, including performances of opera, musicals, operettas as well as a scenes program for training purposes. All CU Opera productions showcase original set, costume and lighting designs. The schedule of performances and auditions follows:

Fall semester - a production in October in Macky Auditorium with auditions in the previous spring semester. Recent fall productions have included Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel.

Spring semester (March) - a production in March in Macky Auditorium with auditions in the previous fall semester. Recent spring mainstage productions have included Bernstein's West Side Story and Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro.

Spring semester (April) - a production in April in the Music Theatre with auditions in the previous fall semester. Recent spring productions in the Music Theatre have included Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice and Britten's The Rape of Lucretia.

Opera Scenes - evenings of scenes from musical theater and opera are scheduled during the regular academic year in the Music Theatre.

Colorado Light Opera
This nationally-known summer festival features two productions produced in repertory during the month of July with auditions in early spring. Recent productions have included South Pacific, Man of La Mancha, Iolanthe, and Pirates of Penzance. Master Classes with Guest Performing Artists, Directors and Designers
Visiting international artists come to campus on a regular basis to present master classes and/or direct productions. Recent visiting artists include Thomas Hampson, Frederica von Stade, Martin Katz, Marc Verzatt and Martin Isepp. Recent set and lighting designers include Peter Dean Beck and Thaddeus Strassberger.

Scholarships/Assistantships
Scholarships and/or assistantships are available for stage directors, conductors, singers and pianists within the CU Opera program. Deadline for these awards is Dec 1. Contact the Graduate Office at the College of Music for exact details and applications.
