Graduate Choral Conducting
The graduate choral conducting program at CU-Boulder is designed to train musicians for professional careers in the world of choral conducting. It offers four programs to graduate students wishing to pursue studies in Choral Conducting. Three of the programs are for the Master of Music degree : Choral Conducting, Choral Conducting and Voice Performance, and Choral Conducting and Public School Teaching. All three offer various opportunities for the study of choral music and performance techniques.
The fourth program is the Doctor of Musical Arts in The Literature and Performance of Choral Music. Unique in its field, the doctoral program places equal emphasis on providing conducting experience and extensive knowledge of choral literature and performance practice. The focus of the program is the Choral Symposium, which focuses on various areas of choral music and has hosted such guest presenters as Karen Grylls (conductor of the award-winning New Zealand Youth Choir), Jameson Marvin (Harvard), and Harriet Simons (formerly of SUNY-Buffalo). Graduates of the doctoral program are well-placed , holding positions as directors of choral activities at major four-year institutions around the country.
Entrance into the doctoral and masters programs consists of a graduate application to the university as well as conducting a CU choir during a rehearsal. In addition, doctoral applicants must submit a research paper showing their best writing. Interested parties should contact Dr. Conlon or Dr. Kaptein for more information on the audition process. Competive teaching assistantships are available, ranging from assisting the director of a choir to conducting one of the undergraduate choirs.
