Dan Castillo, tuba – DMA in Performance and Pedagogy Candidate

Dan Castillo is a very active performer in the Denver metro area.  Along the Front Range, Dan has held the principal tuba positions in the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Longmont Symphony Orchestra, and was recently appointed to the tuba position with the Junior Symphony Guild’s Inside the Orchestra.  In addition, he has performed with the Colorado Symphony, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Boulder Philharmonic, Cheyenne Symphony, and Fort Collins Symphony.  Dan has also performed with the New World Symphony in Miami, FL, and was a member of the River City Brass in Pittsburgh, PA.  In the past, he has been a finalist or semi-finalist for positions with many orchestras and bands across the United States, including the Louisiana Philharmonic, Honolulu Symphony, Detroit Symphony, the President’s Own Marine Band, and the United States Navy Band.

Dan is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at CU Boulder where his is a student of Mike Dunn and a member of the award winning Flatirons Brass, the graduate brass quintet in residence.

Garrett Karlin, tuba – DMA Low Brass Performance & Pedagogy

Garrett Karlin graduated from the University of Redlands in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Tuba Performance. While at Redlands, his primary teachers were Ross Tolbert, former principal tubist with the Minnesota Orchestra, and Scott Sutherland, former principal tubist with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and current tubist with the Presidio Brass Quintet. Garrett was a student musician in the Redlands Symphony Orchestra from 2008-2011 and performed with almost every major university ensemble. He is also a proud alumnus of the national music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.  While in California, he maintained a private studio of fourteen low brass students, many of whom had played in prestigious honor groups such as the CBDA All-State Honor Bands and the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. Garrett also taught at four Southern California high schools as a brass coach.

Garrett is now attending the University of Colorado Boulder on a Teaching Assistantship where he assists with the tuba/euphonium studio in addition to playing tuba in the graduate brass quintet in residence, the Flatirons Brass. He is currently busy auditioning for various professional ensembles and is trying to re-build his private studio now that he has moved to Colorado.
