Application Process

Thank you for your interest in applying to the CU College of Music. There are multiple steps in the application process which you must complete, with the majority of them completed with the on-line application. If you have any application questions, please contact us at

STEP 1 - Review descriptions of graduate degrees

Review descriptions of graduate degrees at Contact the faculty in your area of study to discuss specific programs you are interested in.

STEP 2 - Complete your application

All students must submit an application online at  Within the application, students will be prompted to submit four (4) letters of recommendation.

Master's applicants are required to submit at least one (1) letter of recommendation from an academic (e.g. music theory, music history, music education) faculty member.

DMA/PhD applicants are required to submit at least one (1) letter of recommendation from an academic (e.g. music theory, music history, music education) faculty member; one (1) letter of recommendation in reference to your teaching; and no more than two (2) letters of recommendation from applied/performance faculty members.

STEP 3 - Submit supplemental admission materials

STEP 4 - Take the GRE (Required for PhD and Theory applicants only; Encouraged for MME applicants)

Recent scores for the GRE General Test must be reported directly to the Office of Admissions by December 1 for Theory and PhD applicants.

The University GRE code is 4841 and the College of Music GRE code is 2404.

Applicants to the MME program are strongly advised to submit GRE scores, particularly if the desire to be considered for graduate assistantships.  Applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0 must sbumit GRE scores to be considered for admission.

STEP 5 - Schedule an Audition/Interview

Scheduling of audition/interview is not automatic. Visit the audition information page  for information on audition requirements, dates, and the audition scheduling process.

STEP 6 - International Student Requirements

All international students must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting adequate TOEFL scores. The TOEFL exam  is required of all international graduate applicants whose native language is not English. This includes applicants who have already studied in an English-speaking country for any length of time. TOEFL scores are due by December 1  and must be less than two years old. How to Submit Materials:

The following items must be submitted online:

  • Application (
    • Four (4) Letters of Recommendation
    • Personal Statement
  • Pre-screening and/or Recorded auditions (
  • For review and decision purposes you are required to upload an unofficial copy of your transcript(s) in the online application. We require one copy of the scanned transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution that you attended. This includes community colleges, summer sessions and extension programs. While credits from one institution may appear on the transcript of a second institution, unofficial transcripts must be submitted from each institution, regardless of the length of attendance, and whether or not courses were completed. Failure to list and submit transcripts from all institutions previously attended is considered to be a violation of academic ethics and may result in the cancellation of your admission or dismissal from the university.     ONLY after you are recommended for admission will you need to provide official transcripts.
