Assessment of Music Learning

Course Description:  This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of traditional and contemporary approaches to the assessment of music learning.  Beyond learning about basic assessment terminology and concepts, participants will develop practical skill in:
 
• constructing and administering classroom assessment tools, including written,
performance, and project-oriented assessments

• developing effective grading/reporting systems and student portfolios

• interpreting and utilizing standardized assessment data (including standardized music tests)

• designing assessment plans for elementary or secondary music programs

• developing informed positions on a variety of critical issues related to assessment

 

A majority of class sessions will involve group discussion of assigned readings and practical application of concepts through hands-on activities and weekly assignments.
