Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles and practices of the music education profession. Through readings, class discussion, directed observations, a teaching practicum, and other activities, students will:
ï realistically assess personal interest in and qualifications for teaching music given the nature and demands of the profession
ï develop a thorough understanding of historical, philosophical, curricular, and instructional facets of public school music teaching
ï demonstrate skill in analyzing the components of and evaluating the effectiveness of music instruction
ï demonstrate skill in planning and teaching a brief music lesson or portion of a music rehearsal
ï fulfill degree requirements for oral competency (organization and delivery of information; proper English usage; acceptable diction, articulation, and pronunciation)
Course Requirements
1. Regular attendance! Please notify the instructor regarding any excused absence (illness or attendance at a University-sanctioned event). Unexcused absences will impact final grades!
2. Students are responsible for completing all assigned work on time! Partial credit (10% reduction for each class session late) will be given for no more than three late assignments through the semester.
3. Be open-minded! Approaches or ideas presented in class may conflict
with your own experiences or background. Use this class as an opportunity
to think and learn about music education.
