
Andrew May is a composer and computer music researcher whose music has been performed in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, England, and throughout the United States. SEAMUS and EMF Media have released recordings of his music.
May is best known for his chamber music, though he has written works for orchestra, chorus, and wind ensemble. In particular, his chamber music with live interactive computer systems is widely known. He has presented his computer music and research at electronic music venues including International Computer Music Conferences, SEAMUS national conferences, Third Practice, and Scarborough Electro Acoustic.
May holds a PhD in composition from the University of California San Diego, an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in composition and violin, and a BA from Yale University. His teachers include Roger Reynolds, Mel Powell, and Jon Berger (composition) and Miller Puckette (computer music).
May is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Music Technology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Also a violinist, improviser, and conductor, he has performed in Germany and Switzerland and across the United States, and has been recorded on CRI. He co-directs two contemporary music series, Atomic Clock Music Events and Pendulum, and serves as Americas regional director, Secretary, and Treasurer for the International Computer Music Association. Mayıs work has been supported by grants from the American Music Center and the Center for Research and Creative Work at the University of Colorado, and by numerous commissions.
