Note that graduate students may take undergraduate music technology courses by special arrangement as Independent Studies, provided they complete additional projects of appropriate scope. Please contact individual instructors to make such arrangements.

MUSC 2081, Preparation for the Soundcheck (2 credits)
     Provides an overview of the recording process from the performer's perspective, from soundcheck through final mastering. Uses recorded material from in-class sessions. Examines differing approaches to recording as well as current technologies.

MUSC 2091, Recording Techniques (2 credits)
     Provides hands-on training in various audio recording techniques, acoustics, and sound reinforcement, studio maintenance and troubleshooting. Real-world experience will be gained through individual recording projects and College of Music events. Prerequisite MUSC 2081 or instructor consent.

MUSC 4081, Introduction to Music Technology (3 credits)
     Topics include basic synthesis, musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) sequencing, and music notation by computer. Offered fall and spring. Prerequisite MUSC 2111 or instructor consent.

MUSC 4111, Computer Programming for Musicians (2 credits)
     Designed for musicians with no prior programming knowledge. Covers basic and intermediate programming techniques. Students design software such as a simple MIDI sequencer, computer-aided instruction program, and interactive performance software. Prerequisite MUSC 4081 or instructor consent.

MUSC 4121, Intermediate Music Technology (3 credits)
     Explores more sophisticated uses for technology in composing, arranging, and performance. Topics include advanced sequencing techniques, Finale music processing software, alternative MIDI performance devices, SMPTE, AND multi-track recording. Prerequisite MUSC 4081 or instructor consent.

MUSC 4131, Advanced Sound Synthesis (2 credits)
     Explores the principal sound synthesis techniques available to contemporary musicians. Prerequisite MUSC 4121 or instructor consent.

MUSC 5081, Applications in Music Technology (3 credits)
     GRADUATE STUDENTS ONLY. Presents advanced strategies for applying computer technology in several musical disciplines. Emphasizes the use of technology in composition, music theory, and music education. Offered fall only.
