Flutist and Dalcroze instructor Emma Shubin
(BM) is a native of Rochester, NY and began her musical studies at the age
of eight. After graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy where
she studied music, photography and creative writing, Emma attended the
Conservatory at the Longy School of Music in Boston as a student of
Robert Willoughby. She has participated in various music
festivals, including Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, Aria
International Music Festival and Bowdoin International Summer Music
Festival and has performed in master classes for Leone Buyse, William
Bennett and Trevor Wye. As a recitalist, she has given concerts
with pianist and duo partner Juri Tzsuzuki in Boston, MA, Rochester,
NY, and Wakayama, Japan and with pianist and fellow Interlochen
graduate, Micah Young in Midland, MI, Cambridge, MA, and New York, NY.
A proponent of holistic music education, Emma first became captured by
Dalcroze Eurhythmics during her studies at the Longy School of
Music. A Level I Certified Dalcroze instructor, she has studied
this method of teaching music though movement with veteran Dalcroze
instructors Lisa Parker and Anne Farber. Emma is a student of Christina
Jennings at The University of Colorado at Boulder where she is pursuing

Gina Vega, (DMA) originally
fromVenezuela, is a graduate student of Chistina Jennings at The
University of Colorado. Mrs. Vega began playing the flute when she was
10 years old with the Puerto La Cruz Youth Symphony Orchestra. When she
decided to make music her career she moved to Caracas to pursue her
Bachelor degree in Flute Performance from the Instituto Universitario
de Estudios Musicales in Caracas, as a student of Jose Garcia. There
she received the “Prize for Academic Excellence” for her
outstanding achievement. In 2003 she moved to the United States to
pursue her Master in Arts degree at the University of Iowa with the
renowned flutist Robert Dick, receiving a full tuition scholarship.
While
living in her home country she was principal flutist with the Jose
Antonio Anzoategui Symphony Orchestra, touring with the ensemble to
Colombia and Spain. Also, Mrs Vega was a founding member of the
Venezuelan National Flute Orchestra and performed with the group in the
National Flute Associtation (NFA) Convention in Chicago in 1997. Other
orchestras include the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho Symphony and Simon
Bolivar Symphony Orchestras in Venezuela, the Mahler Festival Orchestra
in Boulder, and the Ottumwa Philharmonic in Iowa.
Among other
prizes Mrs. Vega won second prize at the First Yamaha Flute Competition
in Caracas in 2002, was finalist at the All University Concerto and
Aria Competition at the University of Iowa in 2003. With the Arundo
Winds was Silver Medalist at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in
2006, and First Prize winner at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition
in 2007. She has participated in Masterclasses with internationally
renowned flutists as Michel Debost, William Bennett, and James Galway.
Her past professors include Alexa Still, Tadeu Coelho and Luis Julio
Toro.
Lisa Phillips (DMA), Born in Elmira,
NY, is currently a graduate student at the University of Colorado at
Boulder. A 2004 magna cum laude graduate with a bachelor’s degree
in flute performance from Ithaca College, she began work on a
master’s degree in flute performance at CU in 2006. At the
University of Colorado Lisa performs with the Symphony Orchestra and
the Wind Symphony and with the CU Opera Orchestra. She has also
performed on occasion with the Symphonic Band and the Early Music
Ensemble. At Ithaca College, Lisa was a member of the IC Symphonic Band
and Concert Band. In 2004 she was principal flute of the Concert Band.
She was also principal flute of the 2002 National Symphony
Orchestra/Kennedy Center Young Artists’ Institute in Washington
D.C. and of the 2000 New York State Summer School of the Arts School of
Orchestral Studies. In 2005 she was selected as a performer at the
Jeanne Baxtresser International Flute Masterclass held at Carnegie
Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. She was awarded first prize in the
2004 Rochester Flute Association Competition. She also won the
Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and
performed the Hüe Fantaisie with the orchestra in May of 2001.
Offstage
Lisa enjoys teaching flute privately. She recently joined the faculty
of the University of Colorado Continuing Education Division as lecturer
of flute, and she maintains an active private studio in the Boulder
area. While in Ithaca and Rochester Lisa taught a few private students
and substituted for other area private flute teachers. In 2002 she
taught two beginning flute classes at the Elmira City School District
Summer Arts Camp.Throughout her studies, Lisa has been fortunate to
receive guidance from many great flutists. She studied with Sophia
Gibbs-Kim at the Eastman School of Music Community Education Division
where Lisa received her diploma with honors in 2001. At Ithaca College
she studied with Dr. Wendy Mehne, Rebecca Gilbert, and Claudia
Anderson. Following graduation from Ithaca College Lisa began an
intensified private study with Rebecca Gilbert, principal flute of the
Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a continuation of her private
study she studied with Jill Felber in Santa Barbara, CA in 2005.
Currently Lisa is a student of Christina Jennings.
Carolyn Keyes
(DMA)is originally from western Ohio where she began her flute studies
at the age of nine. In high school she began studying privately
with Judith Bentley at Bowling Green State University, and later
attended Bowling Green as an undergraduate. During her time there
she also studied with Christina Jennings, Leonard Garrison, and Nina
Assimakopolous. Since then she received her masters degree from
the University of North Texas where she studied with Terri Sundberg and
Elizabeth McNutt. Currently Carolyn is pursuing her doctorate at
the University of Colorado where she is a teaching assistant for
Christina Jennings.
As a performer, Carolyn has played in numerous
ensembles including the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, the University of
North Texas Wind Symphony, and the Bowling Green State University
Philharmonia. Through these ensembles, Carolyn has been recorded
on the Naxos, GIA, and Albany labels. Carolyn is also an avid
chamber musician and has performed recitals with guitarists Tim
Courtney and Miles McConnell.
In addition to performing, Carolyn is a passionate
teacher and arts advocate. She was an adjunct faculty member at
the Dallas School of Music where she continues to help develop online
music education software. She also received the Priddy Fellowship
in Arts Leadership through which she took extensive course work in
leadership, current issues, technology, and advocacy in the arts.
As part of the fellowship, Carolyn interned with the Shropshire Music
Foundation, a group that teaches music to war torn children in Europe
and Africa, where she helped to organize their first annual
“Practice for Peace” fundraiser
Allison Hubbell (Sophmore) is
from Laramie, Wyoming. She graduated high school there in 2006.
She then moved to England to spend the year in Trevor Wye's
private flute studio, where she was also fortunate enough to play for
William Bennet, Albert Cooper, and Clifford Benson. Before that,
she studied with Christine Recht and Rod Garnett and took lessons with
Michel Debost and Jimmy Walker. Allison spent August 2007 doing
volunteer work in rural Cambodia.
Thomas Horter (BM) Thomas Horter
is a sophmore at University of Colorado at Boulder. From Texas
originally Thomas often takes part in the masterclasses and contests
offered by the Texas Flute Society. While in high school Thomas was
Principle Flute of the Ft. Worth Youth Orchestra. He also
participated at the NFA conventions in the National High School Flute Choir for three years. On an international
level Thomas has performed as a soloist and chamber artist in England
and Italy. Past teachers includeJan Crisanti, Terri Sundberg, LeeAnne
Thompson and Alma Churchill.
Thomas is also an active flute
repair technician. He holds a padding and overhaul certification from
The Vermont Guild of Flute-Making. While in Vermont Thomas studied
repair with Jon Landell Sr.
Anna Conigliari (BM) is a Junior
at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She is from Flagstaff,
Arizona where she studied with flutist Laura Barron. Throughout
high school, Anna participated in the Arizona All-State Honor Band, the
University of Arizona Honor Band, and was first chair flute of the
Northwest Regional Honor Orchestra for four years. Various
summer activities include the Boulder Flute School with Alexa Still,
the Northern California Flute Camp, the Anatomy of Sound with Amy
Porter, and Aria International Summer Academy. Anna is
very thankful to be the recipient of CU's Presidential Scholarship,
Chancellor's Scholarship, Adopt-A-Student Scholarship, and other music
scholarships.
Maria Mandico (BM) is from
Colorado Springs, and will be a  freshman in Christina Jenning’s
flute studio in Fall ‘08. Her love for music was inspired
by her grandmother, who played Rogers and Hammerstein songs on the
piano for Maria when she was a baby. Maria has been playing piano
for ten years, began flute in 6th grade, and was introduced to piccolo
when a family friend left one on the doorstep in 8th grade…she
has loved playing it ever since! She studied flute with Karen
Morsch and Paul Nagem, and throughout high school she attended many
masterclasses by some of the greats. In July ‘07, she went
to the University of Michigan’s Flute Institute. Maria is a
recipient of the John Philip Sousa award and won the ’08 Denver
Concert Band Young Artist Solo Competition, playing a Vivaldi piccolo
Concerto. She was principle flute in the Colorado Springs Youth
Symphony, and had the opportunity to perform the Mozart G Major
Concerto as the featured soloist on their tour throughout China in June
‘08.
Marie Irene Heinrich (BME) ,
a native of Lafayette, Colorado, is currently a Senior Music Education
student at the University of Colorado. She has served as a soloist with
the Front Range Youth Symphony, performed in a masterclass with Peter
Lloyd (2005), and was second piccolo in the Colorado Mahlerfest
Orchestra (2006). In 2004, Marie was also featured in the Rocky Mountain News
weekly column, "Going Places." Her collegiate accomplishments also
include Dean's List recognition, membership of the "Golden Buffalo"
Marching Band, membership of Kappa Kappa Psi, and a founding membership
of the Diverse Musician's Alliance. Her previous teachers have included
Kim Macmillan and Jennifer Merrill. At the University of
Colorado, Marie previously studied with Alexa Still and currently
studies with Christina Jennings.
South Africa native, Cobus Du Toit (MM) is a sought after freelance flautist in Gauteng,
performing regularly with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra,
Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, and University of Pretoria Symphony
Orchestra. On invitation he has performed at venues such as Sandton Art
Gallery, RAU Art Gallery, and Northwards. As a soloist he has performed
with the Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the University of
Pretoria Symphony Orchestra. He served as Principal flautist of the
National Youth Orchestra that toured Germany for the Beethoven
Festival. Cobus has performed in masterclasses with Ingrid Hasse,
Ljubia Jovanovi, Matthew Dufour, Christina Jennings, Jeanne
Baxtresser, Alberto Almarza, Raffaele Trevisani and Trevor Wye.
Melissa Lotspeich (MM)
is currently working on her Master's in Music at the University of
Colorado at Boulder, with Christina Jennings. Melissa graduated
Cum Laude with her Bachelor's in Music from the Lamont School of Music
at the University of Denver. At Lamont, Melissa studied with
Pamela Endsley, the principal flutist of the Colorado Symphony
Orchestra. For a large portion of her undergraduate degree,
Melissa maintained the position of principal flutist of the Lamont
Symphony Orchestra and was involved with various chamber ensembles such
as the top woodwind quintet and flute choir. In the last ten
years, Melissa has toured England and Japan giving recitals and
concerts, won concerto competitions, and has been awarded a grant to
intern with a prestigious organization. Since 1998, Melissa has
been teaching privately and presently maintains a studio of thirteen
students.
Julia Michelle Carrasco Barnett (MM) is praised for her rich tone and fluid technique throughout the instrument’s range, flutist Julia Barnett is quickly emerging as a leading musician of her generation. Born and raised in La Mesa, California, she is currently pursuing a Masters of Music in Flute performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder with Christina Jennings. She received her Bachelor's of Music in flute performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in 2007 as a student of Leone Buyse. Most recently, in the spring of 2008 Ms. Barnett was named a Fenstermaker Scholar by the Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego. Her interest in new music led to the commission and premiere of Jacob Barton's ¡AY! ¡AY! ¡AY! ¡AY! in 2006, a work for Flute, Percussion and Kalimba, based upon Mexican folk songs. Ms. Barnett has won scholarships to attend the Brevard Music Festival, as well as the Pierre Monteux School of Orchestra and Conducting. Her broad range of musical styles and repertoire encourages her love of teaching. Prior to her studies at Rice, she was a winner of the San Diego Symphony Concerto Competition, and the La Jolla Symphony Young Artist Competition. She has participated in master classes by Marianne Gedigian, Kathleen Chastain, and Mark Sparks. Ms. Barnett has also performed in numerous solo and chamber recitals, as well as with the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra, Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra, and Colorado Chamber and Symphony Orchestra. Her solo concert appearances include performances with the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra. Some of her former teachers include Leone Buyse, Claude Montuex, Clay Ellerbroek, Adan Provencio, and Elizabeth Buck. Ms. Barnett spent the summer of 2006 in Kolkata, India, working with orphans and abandoned children, teaching English and playing of games, where she also learned how to dance and sing some songs in Hindi. She spent the summer of 2008 as a Fellow at the Perlman Music Program in New York.
Alina Windell is a DMA candidate
with Christina Jennings at The University of Colorado at
Boulder. She holds a Masters of Music degree from Stony
Brook University, where she studied with Carol Wincenc. While
there, she performed in solo and chamber recitals, in the Stony Brook
Symphony Orchestra, and at various professional functions on Long
Island and in New York City. She also holds a Bachelors
Degree in Music Performance from Indiana University, where she
performed extensively in solo recitals, chamber groups, and with the
University, Concert, and Chamber Orchestras. She also played with
the Camerata Orchestra in Bloomington. Ms. Windell participated
in several summer music festivals, including the Duxbury Music
Festival, and most recently, the National Orchestral Institute at the
University of Marlyand. Ms. Windell is also an active teacher,
having taught a wide range of levels and ages.

Amanda Brignola (BME) is a freshman Music Education student at the University
of Colorado at Boulder. She previously studied with Paul Nagem in
Colorado Springs. During high school Amanda played flute in the
Colorado Springs Youth Symphony and was principal flute of the Pikes
Peak Winds Symphony for two years. She also participated in All State
Orchestra, CU Honor Band, CSU Honor Band, All City Honor Band, and
toured Europe as a Colorado Ambassador of Music.

Ismael Reyes is a DMA student of
Christina Jennings at The University of Colorado at Boulder. Mr. Reyes
received his B.M. from the Instituto Universitario de Estudios
Musicales in Caracas, Venezuela and his M.M. from the University of
Iowa with Robert Dick. He has appeared as a soloist with several
orchestras in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and
Argentina. During 2000 Mr. Reyes was invited as solo flutist by the
Juventudes Andinas Symphony Orchestra for their South American Tour.
Mr. Reyes has been a prize winner in competitions such as the First
Latin American Flute Competition in Caracas, Venezuela, the Music
Scholarship Award by the Dante Alighieri Society of Denver and the
Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Competition at the University of Colorado at
Boulder. Mr. Reyes has also been a semifinalist in the Frank Bowen
Young Artist Competition in Albuquerque and the Texas Flute Society
Myrna Brown Flute Competition. As a member of the Center for New Music
in Iowa, Mr. Reyes participated in chamber music recitals in United
States and Russia and had a solo appearance in the Society of
Electro-Acoustic Music (SEAMUS) National Conference in 2002. More
recently, Mr. Reyes was selected as a competitor for the First
‘Aurele Nicolet’ International Flute Competition in
Beijing, China. Ysmael Reyes is currently Principal Flute of the
Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra and Flute Instructor of the Rocky Mountain
Center for the Musical Arts. He has studied in the past with Luis Julio
