The Flute Studio holds approximately fifteen undergraduate and graduate students. These advanced flutists hail from such places as Colorado, Texas, New York, Mexico, Venezuela, and South Africa. Students come from a broad range of backgrounds and have done degree work at institutions including Ithaca College, Rice University, Indiana, UNT, and Stony Brook. There are two Graduate Teaching Assistants designated for the Flute Studio. One performs in the Arundo Winds, an award-winning Woodwind Quintet. The other serves as the studio assistant (usually a DMA student) who teaches non-major flute students, holds sectionals, gives extra help with lesson materials, and performs in major ensembles. Graduate flutists are also eligible for other assistantships within the College of Music. For more information on auditioning please visit the Prospective Student section. Degrees are offered in Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music in Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music, Masters of Music in Performance, Master of Music Performance in Pedagogy, Woodwind Certificate Program, and the Doctorate of Musical Arts. Students have weekly lessons, studio class, excerpts class, and technique class. The flute studio tremendously benefits from the Collaborative Piano Program. Under the direction of Alexandra Nyugen and Margaret McDonald, collaborative majors learn important flute repertoire, which is coached by our faculty and performed on recitals. We are fortunate to host guest artists annually. The 2008-2009 school year includes plans for masterclasses with Amy Porter, George Pope, Eva Amsler, and Nancy Stagnitta. CU's music library houses the complete solo collection of legendary flutist Martha Rearick. All students participate in ensembles, which include Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Opera, Chamber music, Pendulum (new music ensemble), and the Early Music Ensemble. CU is dedicated to developing the whole musician. Students are expected to balance academic and instrumental excellence, and have the opportunity to participate in a range of diverse programs, such as the Entrepreneurship Center for Music, classes in the Alexander Technique, or the West African Highlife Ensemble. For a complete look at the many diverse and excellent programs- please explore the College of Music site.
