Kevin McCarthy

Associate Professor of Musicology

Kevin McCarthy is an Associate Professor of Musicology. Dr. McCarthy received degrees in Music Education from the University of Notre Dame, Michigan State University, and Case Western Reserve University where he studied with Bennett Reimer. Dr. McCarthy has taught choral and band classes at Chanel High School in Ohio, Saint John College, and Fairmont State College prior to his appointment at CU. He has served as State President of CMEA, Chairman of the Colorado Alliance for Arts Education, President of the Boulder Assembly on the Arts and Humanities, and Chairman of the Colorado State Department of Education Task Force on the Arts. He has also served on the Executive Board of Music Educators National Conference and as Research Representative to the Southwest Division of MENC. Dr. McCarthy has received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Alliance for Arts Education of the John F. Kennedy Center and the bronze medal of the Friends of the John F. Kennedy Center. He was named an Outstanding Advisor at the University of Colorado in 1991 and under his direction, the College of Music Advising Program was named Outstanding Undergraduate Advising Program on campus. He was inducted into the CMEA Hall of Fame in 1992 and has served as CMEA state research chair since 1992. In 2000, he was the recipient of the University of Colorado’s prestigious Stearns Award. In addition to his duties at the University, Dr. McCarthy has been actively involved in research studies with the Colorado Symphony and CHSAA to help justify music programs in school systems. Dr. McCarthy has researched music in the Civilian Conservation Corps and is teaching a new course on the American Film Musical from 1926 to 1954, and on Nelson Eddy.
