Professor of Bassoon Yoshiyuki (Yoshi) Ishikawa is regarded as one of the most distinguished bassoonists in the US. He has performed throughout the US and in Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania and South America. A master teacher and a dedicated pedagogue, Ishikawa often is called to present master classes along with his performance engagements. He has taught at the most prestigious schools of music and conservatories of the world, such as St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, Tokyo School of Music, Australian National Academy of Music, Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Eastman School of Music, and Indiana University. His participation in music festivals and conferences includes the Tokyo Double Reed Festival, Australia’s Townsville Chamber Music Festival, and numerous performances at the most prominent and important event for double reed players around the globe, namely, the annual conference of the International Double Reed Society (IDRS). His significant IDRS conference performances were at the Northern Royal Conservatory of Music in England, Hochshule für Musik und darstelle Kunst in Frankfurt Germany, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, Conservatorio Municipal de Musica, Manuel de Falla, Buenos Aires Argentina, Rotterdam Conservatory in The Netherlands, and the Banff Centre, Canada. In addition to performances and master class presentations, Ishikawa often is called as a consultant for various international competitions and conferences, and he has served as a judge for significant international competitions held in the US and abroad, namely, the Fernand Gillet-Hugo Fox International Bassoon Competition, The Tokyo Wind and Brass Competition and the Rimsky-Korsakov Competition of St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia.
Ishikawa held the position as the president of the International Double Reed Society from 1994-1998, and currently serves as the editor of online publications for the organization. Since 1991, he has held the position of professor of bassoon at the University of Colorado at Boulder, College of Music. He is the chairperson of the woodwinds faculty of the University of Colorado College of Music. In addition to bassoon performance, Ishikawa teaches chamber music and pedagogy classes at the College. He is also the founder and the principal coach of the award winning graduate ensemble of the College of Music, the Arundo Winds. Under Ishikawa’s direction, Arundo winds was the first prize winner of the 2007 Plowman Chamber Music competition, was a prize winner of the Fischoff National Music Competition in 2006, and was invited to compete at the Le Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon in 2008. Since 1994, he has served as the co-principal bassoonist of the Colorado Ballet Orchestra. A native-born Japanese, Ishikawa received his musical training in the US. He attended The University of Michigan, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts
Degree in Bassoon Performance, and Northwestern University, where he earned both Master of Music in Bassoon Performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees.
