College of Music
Strings Department

The college offers high-level experiences for string players through weekly individual lessons with an excellent faculty and through the opportunity to participate in various outstanding ensembles. In addition to the University Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, string students have the opportunity to participate in CU Opera productions.

The string faculty is particularly interested in providing students with numerous learning experiences and performance opportunities in chamber music. Regular coaching sessions are offered by faculty members and the internationally renowned Takács Quartet. Exciting new scholarship opportunities supported by the Starling Foundation and the Takács Society are available. The Takács Quartet also accepts students for individual study. Weekly performance classes are a vital part of the core curriculum and give the string players a regular forum for their solo and chamber music repertory.

Graduate string students have opportunities to hold teaching assistantships and fellowships. The string faculty offers an MM in Performance and in Performance/Pedagogy, a DMA in Performance, and a Professional Certificate in String Quartet Performance. In addition to the standard college chamber music programs in which all string students participate, the department has established a string quartet residency program in which students work intensively throughout the year with the string faculty and with the Takács Quartet. For further information about this fellowship program, please contact Judith Glyde at 303-492-5921 or judith.glyde@colorado.edu.
