CU NOW will present the world premiere of selected scenes from 'The Master'. an opera by composer Alberto Caruso with a libretto by noted Irish author Colm Toibin from his acclaimed novel of the same name. Performances will be held on the CU campus in the ATLAS Black Box Theater on June 13 at 7:30pm and on June 15 at 2pm. On June 14, audiences are invited to attend a live recording session of the entire work. The production will be directed by Ron Daniels, the former artistic director of the The Other Place Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s experimental theater in Stratford-upon-Avon. After 15 years directing for the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was named an honorary associate director. He moved to the United States and became the associate artistic director of the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Ron has directed at many opera companies across the globe including Boston Lyric Opera, HoustonGrand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Opera Colorado, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Florida Grand Opera, Washington National Opera, LA Opera, Berkshire Opera, Theatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, Arizona Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Theater an der Wien, Théâtre du Chatelêt in Paris, Teatro Bellas Artes, the Festival Internacional de Guanajuato, and Teatro Municipal de Opéra de Nice.
Upcoming productions include a revival of Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of FleetStreet at Virginia Opera, the world première of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird at Opera Philadelphia, the world première of Morning Star with music by Ricky Ian Gordon at Cincinnati Opera and La Bohème at Opera Theatre of St Louis.
Concert: Sunday, June 8 at 2 pm. In addition to a sneak-peek scene from ‘The Master’, this event will include a program of vocal works written by CU NOW composers from the past 5 years: Daniel Kellogg, Robert Aldridge, Herschel Garfein, Kirk Mechem, Lori Laitman and Libby Larsen.
NEW: CU NOW Composer Fellows Institute is an exciting, new initiative linking select CU student-composers with composer Alberto Caruso, the CU Composition faculty and the CU NOW musical and direction staff to create new vocal works for the stage. The 2014 Fellows include Chelsea Komschlies, Ryan Connell, Raechel Sherwood, Trevor Villwock, and Dan Cox. The Fellows’ scenes will be featured on the June 8 concert.
