  • Toku Kawata performing with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta

On March 3, 2014, pianist Toku Kawata, doctoral student of Dr. Andrew Cooperstock, performed the closing Rondo of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58 with the New York Concerti Sinfonietta under the leadership of conductor Paul Hostetter at the Church of St. Joseph in Greenwich Village. Critic Michael Sherwin noted that "Kawata gave a brisk and vivacious account, distinguished by its clearly articulated keyboard figurations" and that "the orchestra responded with an alert and stylish accompaniment, evidencing a wide variety of dynamics." A native of Japan, Toku plays both the piano and the violin. He holds degrees from the University of North Texas and the University of Central Arkansas and has attended the Aspen Music Festival several times as a student of Ann Schein.
