
Cobus started his classical training as a pianist and later moved on to the flute while attending Pro Arte Alphen Park, a school specializing in the refining of the visual and performing arts.
In 2003 Cobus took part in the Beeld Eisteddfod and won the woodwind category. In the same year Cobus played his Trinity School of Music Grade 8 piano exam and received the silver medal for the highest mark obtained in South Africa. Also in 2003 Cobus took part in the Port Elizabeth National Youth Competition where he was of the finalists, winning the woodwind category prize and the prize for the best performance of a work by a South African composer.
In 2004 Cobus took part in the UNISA South African Bursary Competition, where he was awarded the Du Toit-Van Tonder Bursary and the SAMRO Prize for the best performance of a work by a South African composer. Cobus already performed as a soloist with the Kwazulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, UP Symphony Orchestra and the Boulder Philharmonic. In 2005 Cobus received a Pretorium Trust bursary from the University of Pretoria. Also in 2005 Cobus got through to the final round of the ATKV Musique Competition and received the prize for the best rendering of a South African composition as well as the woodwind category prize.
In 2006 Cobus was one of twenty five flautists chosen worldwide to perform for Jeanne Baxtresser at her International Masterclasses. Cobus already received master classes from Ingrid Hasse, Ljubiša Jovanovic, Matthew Dufour, Alberto Almarza, Raffaele Trevisani as well as Trevor Wye.
Cobus is currently the principal flute of the National Youth Orchestra of South Africa which toured to Germany for the Beethoven Festival in September of last year. In 2006 Cobus took part in the UNISA Overseas Bursary Competition and received the Gertrude Buchanan prize. In 2006 and 2007 Cobus received a Pretorium Trust bursary from the University of South Africa for the second and third time. Also in 2007 Cobus won the UNISA Performers Licentiate Competition, Colorado Flute Club Orchestral Excerpt Competition and the Boulder Philharmonic Young Artist Competition.
Cobus also prides himself as being a performer of new music having played in world premieres by noted composers such as Stefans Grove and James Rich and David Childs.
Cobus is a sought after freelance flautist in Gauteng, South Africa performing regularly with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, and University of Pretoria Symphony Orchestra. On invitation he has performed at venues such as Sandton Art Gallery, RAU Art Gallery, and Northwards with guitarist Conrad Calitz and pianist Annalien Ball, both highly successful artists in their own right. He has also performed in productions at Klein Karoo National Arts Festival in Oudtshoorn as well as at Aardklop in Potchefstroom. Cobus also recorded a CD under the label Salon Music with Gina Beukes, principal violist of the London Symphony Orchestra and the CD reached number one on the South African Top 20 charts.
Cobus holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Pretoria where he studied flute under Professor John Hinch and is currently pursuing his Graduate studies at the University of Colorado under Christina Jennings.
