
Alexander Ritter George began studying the horn at the age of 11 in his hometown of Pocatello, Idaho. He made his recital debut four years later at the Idaho Music Educators Association’s State Solo competition, where he earned first prize. During his secondary school years he was a horn student of Craig Knutson, Principal Horn of the Idaho State Civic Symphony, and William Barnewitz, Associate Principal Horn of the Utah Symphony.
Mr. George attended Philadelphia’s prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, where he was the recipient of the Grace Sherman Fellowship, and studied horn with Jerome Ashby, Associate Principal Horn of the New York Philharmonic. During this period of conservatory study, he recorded with the NFL Films Orchestra, and spent summers at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Scotia Festival of Music.
After earning a Bachelor’s degree from the Curtis Institute, Mr. George accepted a Graduate Assistantship at Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music. Under the tutelage of William Caballero, Principal Horn of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mr. George performed with the National Repertory Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and completed a Master’s degree.
Mr. George is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he studies with Michael Thornton, Principal Horn of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. As Solo Horn of the Arundo Winds, Mr. George won first prize at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition. He has also performed with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and is Adjunct Horn Teacher at Metropolitan State College of Denver.
