Bachelor of Music

This degree provides pre-professional training for those students who expect to engage in a career in performance, composition, or musicology (including ethnomusicology). Studies in this degree emphasize the development of performance and/or composition skills, musicianship and associated studies in music, with an expectation of academic excellence as well. Areas of concentration include: composition, musicology, piano, jazz piano, organ, church music, harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, string bass, harp, classical guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, saxophone with an emphasis in jazz performance, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, opera, music theatre, and voice. A typical BM degree includes:

Bachelor of Music Education

This degree program, which includes approved coursework for teaching licensure, is designed to provide superior preparation for the teaching of music in the primary and secondary schools. Degree tracks include choral music, instrumental music, choral-general music or instrumental-general music.

Bachelor of Arts in Music

The BA in Music offers students the opportunity to gain a broad liberal arts education with a concentration in music studies. Students in this program may focus on performance, composition, musicology, ethomusicology, or music theory. This degree plan is popular among those students who wish to double major with journalism, business, engineering, or one of the areas of study offered by the College of Arts and Sciences. Some double majors take more than four years to complete. Some students completing the BA in Music have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge to continue on to graduate studies in music. However, the BA is a degree often selected by those students who expect to go on to careers in some other field.

Undergraduate Certificate Programs
The college offers full-time music students the option of earning one of two special certificates in conjunction with their degrees. Participating students elect the certificate’s curriculum in addition to the normal requirements of the degree program.

Certificate in Jazz Studies
The Jazz Program offers a Certificate in Jazz Studies for undergraduate music majors. It offers a variety of experiences in the jazz idiom which allows students to study jazz more in-depth than required by the degree programs. The certificate program consists of an intense 18-hour curriculum in both the academic and performance areas, concluding with a jazz recital. Courses include jazz theory and aural foundations, improvisation, history of jazz, scoring and arranging, jazz piano, jazz combo, jazz ensemble and jazz techniques for the music educator. Certificate in Music Technology
Computers and electronics play an increasing role in the lives of musicians in the early 21st century. The College of Music offers a Music Technology Certificate for undergraduate music majors who wish to augment their degree with comprehensive studies in music technology. The curriculum consists of 14 additional credit hours in music technology drawn from the College of Music’s music technology, concluding with an independent project in computer music composition, performance, or research under the supervision of a member of the music technology faculty.
