Most of the scholarship and graduate assistant awards are made for the academic year, and the deadline for application materials is December 1 in order to be considered for these awards. Scholarship awards will be made only on the basis of availability, beyond this date. Aside from scholarship consideration, international applications generally take several months to process, and we therefore we require you submit your materials by December 1.

Please note that applications and all required supporting documents must be received by the college of Music before admittance can be considered. The TOEFL exam (written or computer) is required of all international students whose native language is not English. Minimum recommended scores are 520 for master's students (210 computer) and 550 for doctoral students (213 computer). All students whose native language is not English are required to take an English placement exam with the English as a Second Language (ESL) Department upon arrival on campus and to abide by the recommendations that department.

Documents required for admission include: Application and fee; four letters of recommendation, two original transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended, TOEFL scores, and a completed financial form. Expertise in the major area should be demonstrated in a manner appropriate to the medium:

Applicants for performance or performance/pedagogy degrees should submit audition tapes that are ten to twenty minutes in length and demonstrate proficiency and appropriate stylistic performance of music from a variety of style periods and geographical areas. Composition majors should submit scores and tapes of those scores being performed. Conducting applicants should submit video tapes. Musicology students (masters and doctorate) should submit research papers. All doctoral applicants should send a term paper or written thesis to demonstrate the ability to write in the English language in a lucid, organized, and substantive manner. Music Education majors are not required to send an audition tape. Tapes, scores, and research papers will be returned to the applicant if return postage and an addressed mailing envelope is provided (stamps only please).
