Application Process Overview


Thank you for your interest in applying to the CU College of Music. There are multiple steps in the application process which you must complete, with the majority of them completed with the on-line application. If you have any questions, please contact us at gradmusc@colorado.edu.

DEADLINES
Application deadlines for Fall 2010 admission are as follows (there are no exceptions to these deadlines):
12/1/09 for all International Applicants to all Programs

12/1/09 for applicants to Voice, non-collaborative Piano, Jazz, Flute, DMA Strings programs (prescreening CD also required)

12/1/09 for applicants to Choral/Wind/Orchestral Conducting, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Music Education, Musicology, MM String, Theory/Composition, Keyboard programs

STEP 1
Review the letter of greeting to prospective students from our Associate Dean for Graduate Studies

STEP 2
If you have not already done so, read the College of Music brochure which contains information about the College, its programs, and faculty. You may also use the Quick Find feature on the left of each page on this website to find faculty and department web pages.

STEP 3
Review graduate degree plans in your area of interest.

STEP 4
Contact the faculty representative in your area of study to discuss our programs and your specific area of interest.

STEP 5
Visit the University of Colorado Graduate School website to apply online. Complete all portions of the application to submit electronically:

1. Application
2. Four Recommendations required (done online or by printing out supplemental materials and mailing to recommenders)
3. Tuition classification form (Colorado residents only – part of on-line application)
4. Financial Statement for International Applicants (part of on-line application)
5. Application fee payment ($50 domestic; $70 international)

STEP 6
Submit initial application materials directly to the College of Music Graduate Office, 301 UCB, Boulder, CO 80309. All materials must be received by December 1 deadline. This includes:

• Pre-screening CD
• 2 complete original sets of transcripts from EVERY institution attended after high school (including originals from any school where credits where transferred from)
• Writing samples if DMA or PhD applicant
• If applying for MMED program, must submit Critical Issues essay.
• If applying for Theory program, may submit Theory TA application.
• If applying for Voice program, must submit Graduate Audition for Singers application.
• GRE/TOEFL scores as required (additional info below)
- Strongly recommended for music education MME applicants; required of music education MME applicants with a GPA below 3.0
- International students must also: Demonstrate proficiency in English. TOEFL scores are required: Master’s 520 (79-80 IB), Doctorate 550 (68 IB), OR one year of study at an accredited US institution will fulfill this requirement.

(OPTIONAL)

Plan a visit to the CU-Boulder Campus. An ideal time to visit with professors, attend classes, observe rehearsals and private lessons, and become acquainted with our campus. It would be an excellent idea to coordinate your visit with an audition/interview (see next step).

STEP 7
Schedule an audition. Auditions cannot be scheduled until your application is complete. To request an audition, send an e-mail to gradmusc@colorado.edu including your full name, degree & program applying for, mailing address and phone #. You will be contacted once it has been verified that your application has been received.

Visit www.colorado.edu/music/applying/gradapply/auditions.html for more information on dates, etc. Students who are unable to visit the campus may submit recordings of high quality or other appropriate documentation of their proficiency in the major area of study.

STEP 8
Scholarships, fellowships and assistantships
All applicants are automatically considered for all College of Music awards if application and all materials are received by December 1 deadline. Assistantships in the theory/composition and voice department require a separate application (see their individual websites). Review information on scholarships and assistantships.
