Admission Requirements

Applicants to graduate degree programs are expected to present undergraduate credentials equivalent to those earned at the University of Colorado. Exceptions are made for the MME with Certification program.

Entrance requirements for most doctoral programs include: a master's degree in music comparable to the master's degree at this university or demonstrated equivalency. Students may be accepted for PhD in musicology studies directly from the bachelor's degree. Application materials required for all graduate programs include a completed application, an application fee, four letters of recommendation, and two official transcripts from each institution attended. Performance majors are required to audition in person or by recording (CD, VCR, or audio tape), however students seeking consideration for scholarships or assistantships are strongly encouraged to present a live audition. A graduate voice scholarship competition is held at the end of January. The deadline for applications to this competition is in December. Voice applicants who submit a recorded audition should prepare a professional-quality tape approximately 20 minutes in length that demonstrates a variety of historical periods and performance styles.

All performers should submit a repertoire list and selected programs. Composers should submit scores and recordings of live performers playing their works, while conductors are required to provide video tapes demonstrating their ability. Applicants in music education must provide two essays related to their goals and professional issues and are encouraged to submit a video tape of their teaching activity. DMA and PhD candidates must submit evidence of writing proficiency such as term papers or theses.

GRE scores are required of all PhD applicants and those applying to the master's in musicology program; they are suggested for applicants to other graduate programs. Students who are applying for admission should take the GRE in time for their scores to be available to the graduate awards selection committee. GREs can be taken by computer at almost any time.
