American Music Research Center

Welcome to the American Music Research Center (AMRC) at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music!

Since 1967, the AMRC has been dedicated to exploring and celebrating the diverse, rich traditions of American music. Jointly housed between the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Music and University Libraries, the AMRC is home to a rare music repository that includes scores, papers, recordings and material artifacts that document the history of American music and its creators.

We regularly sponsor public events and community outreach activities—concerts, conferences, publications and lectures—and provide grants to support both institutionally-affiliated and independent scholars focused on American music research. Visiting scholars and the public are welcome to visit by appointment.

Mission statement
The American Music Research Center supports the research, performance and preservation of all musics of the Americas, with a particular emphasis on the diversity of musics of the United States. As a scholarly and inclusive organization, we are committed to public outreach and community engagement as well as serving a diversity of musicians, academics, librarians and researchers.

The AMRC has embarked on a research project aimed at documenting, preserving and engaging with diverse musical and cultural influences in and around Pueblo, Colorado. Backed by a CU Boulder Research & Innovation Seed Grant and a CU Boulder Outreach Award from the Office for Outreach and Engagement, Soundscapes of the People explores ways that musical traditions have served to bridge social, ethnic, urban/rural and religious identities.
