"Composing at the Computer" (Musc 4111) is an experimental and experiential class. The week by week syllabus and plan for the class are subject to change (because randomness and non-linearity are essential components of creativity!, and because I like to respond to the different directions the class can take). The main thing we are going to learn together is how to make sound/music and interactive graphics with computers (and if you already know how to do this, then the class will be an opportunity to refine your skills). We will use two primary software tools: Max/MSP/Jitter and Live. We will use these tools to create fixed compositions, as well as to develop the skills to improvise with other musicians and interactive artists. Therefore, there are two basic types of assignments in the class: preparation of fixed compositions, or preparation for improvisation within certain guidelines. Assignments and completion dates will be given on this linked page as the course progresses The class will present at least one performance in the Black Box Theater of the ATLAS building. The performance may involve collaboration with dancers and other artists. See below for some of the topics that will be covered with respect to both software tools. See the conceptual overview for another representation of similar information.
