Choose ONE of the following topics and write a 1-2 page paper (be sure to indicate at the top of your paper which question you are answering):

a) Compare the philosophical basis of Chinese music with the philosophical basis of Indian music.

b) Compare traditional Korean music with traditional Indian music in terms of sound elements (i.e., melody, scale, rhythm, improvisation, timbre, etc.).

c) Summarize the four periods in the history of Japanese music: Ancient Japanese Court Music, Medieval Narratives and Theatricals, Edo Period Instrumental and Theatrical Music, and Music Since Meiji (1868).
