OCEANIA:

Papua New Guinea (music of Mt. Bosavi recorded by Steven Feld)

Music of the Kaluli people of Papua New Guinea:

an example of emic concepts of the conceptualization of sound.

Emic perspective: subjective knowledge about one’s own culture.

Etic perspective: objective knowledge gathered by observation.

Aesthetics: evaluation or theory of expressive culture (art, music, language, etc.)

Dulugu ganalan (“lift-up-over-sounding”): Kaluli aesthetics of performance

This aesthetic appreciation/conceptualization of music connects the Kaluli people to their environment and serves as an expression of their cosmology (world view).
