EMUS 1832: Appreciation of Music
Caballero
Detailed Schedule of Lectures, Reading, and Assignments

NOTES
1. Reading, listening and listening exercises are due on the date under which they appear.

2. Page numbers (pp.) always refer to Craig Wright, Listening to Music, third edition.

3. Roman numerals refer to movements of works. For example, Haydn, Symphony No. 88, IV, means the fourth movement of that work by Haydn.

4. I indicate the six discs and introductory disc as "CD1, CD2..., Introd. CD," etc. I indicate track numbers with arabic numerals in square brackets; e.g. CD3 [4] means compact disc 3, track 4.

5. The abbreviation "L.E." refers to the Listening Exercises found at the end of chapters in the textbook.

Important reference books

After your textbook and its glossary, the most useful general reference on musical terminology is The New Harvard Dictionary of Music, edited by Don Randel. For more detailed biographies of the composers, see The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, edited by Stanley Sadie. This source is available to you on-line through the University Library's on-line catalogue, Chinook. Look under "reference tools."

Copies of both these books are also available in the reference sections of Norlin Library and at the Music Library. Look up the call numbers in Chinook.
