University of Colorado Mountain Research Station
The Summer Climate
The summer climate at the Mountain Research Station is pleasant,
with warm (not hot) days, cool to cold nights, and short afternoon
thunderstorms particularly in July and August (monthly average
precipitation = 2.5 inches). The average relative humidity is 60-65%, but
daytime values are often half of that. Special care must be taken to
prevent sunburn at this high elevation (9500 feet) a sunscreen rated at
least SPF 15 should be worn at all times.
Above treeline, on Niwot Ridge, the weather can change in a
matter of minutes, so one must be prepared for sun, wind precipitation
(including snow or hail!) and lightning in the same day. Daily
temperatures on the Ridge have mean ranges of 33F to 54F, but can range
from 5F to 70F.
