Eligibility

  • Student should be an undergraduate in mechanical engineering  at CU-Boulder
  • No previous research experience is required
  • The conference must be technical and research based
  • Students who have previously received the GEARS undergraduate stipend are not eligible

Instructions

Interested students should submit an application to the 2007 GEARS committee by Thursday, March 1st, 2007.  This application should include:

  1. Cover sheet with student name and contact information, as well as CU engineering professor name and contact information
  2. Budget sheet with information for travel, hotel and registration costs to attend any of the conferences below or one of your choice:

2007 Applied Mechanics and Materials Conference
(McMAT 2007) Jun 03 2007 - Jun 07 2007, Austin, Texas, United States

2007 Summer Bioengineering Conference
Jun 20 2007 - Jun 24 2007, Keystone, Colorado, United States

Energy Sustainability 2007
Jun 27 2007 - Jun 30 2007, Long Beach, California, United States

International Symposium of Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM 2007)
Jul 23 2007 - Jul 25 2007, Ann Arbor, Missouri, United States

5th Joint ASME/JSME Fluids Engineering Summer Conference
Jul 30 2007 - Aug 02 2007, San Diego, California, United States

**For more information about these conferences, check out the ASME website:  http://calendar.asme.org/.

  1. An essay describing your interest in the conference (single space, 12pt, max 500 words)
  2. A short recommendation from a CU engineering professor (max 250 words)

Note:  Items 1-3 should include the applicant’s middle initial and last four digits of their student ID number or social security number (i.e. W-5894) in the top right corner.  Items 2&3 should NOT have the applicant’s name anywhere.  This is to preserve impartiality by the selection committee who as teaching assistants have become familiar with many of the undergraduate students in the department.  Any application not following these guidelines will not be evaluated.

Applications will be evaluated by the GEARS committee according to the depth of interest described in the essay and the recommendation from a professor.  Students will be notified that they have received the award, and where to pick up their check shortly after the GEARS even takes place.  Award recipients must spend the money towards the conference and submit a (1 page) conference report to GEARS c/o Professor Oleg Vasilyev by January 1, 2008.

The application can be downloaded as a word file or as a pdf file.
