GEARS Undergraduate Stipend - 2007
In order to facilitate ME
undergraduate student interest in research and graduate school, GEARS
would like to offer stipends to allow students to attend a
technical/research conference. These stipends are made possible
through the Engineering Excellence Fund.
Eligibility
- Student should be an undergraduate in
mechanical engineering at CU-Boulder
- No previous research experience is required
- The conference must be technical and research
based
- Students who have previously received the GEARS
undergraduate stipend are not eligible
Instructions
Interested students
should submit an application to the 2007 GEARS committee by Thursday,
March 1st, 2007. This application should include:
- Cover
sheet with student name and contact information, as well as CU
engineering professor name and contact information
- Budget
sheet with information for travel, hotel and registration costs to
attend any of the conferences below or one of your choice:

- An
essay describing your interest in the conference (single space, 12pt,
max 500 words)
- A
short recommendation from a CU engineering professor (max 250 words)
Note: Items 1-3 should include the
applicant’s middle initial and last four digits of their student ID
number or social security number (i.e. W-5894) in the top right
corner. Items 2&3 should NOT have the applicant’s name
anywhere. This is to preserve impartiality by the selection
committee who as teaching assistants have become familiar with many of
the undergraduate students in the department. Any application not
following these guidelines will not be evaluated.
Applications will be evaluated by the GEARS committee
according to the depth of interest described in the essay and the
recommendation from a professor. Students will be notified that
they have received the award, and where to pick up their check shortly
after the GEARS even takes place. Award recipients must spend the
money towards the conference and
submit a (1 page) conference report to GEARS c/o Professor Oleg
Vasilyev by January 1, 2008.
