Port Camera

 

This project focused on a novel port camera system for laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. This project was in collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Schoen in the Department of Surgery at CU-Anschutz.

VSD Camera

 

This project focused on a novel camera system for viewing Ventricular Septal Defects (VSD). This project was in collaboration with Dr. Max Mitchell at CU-Anschutz and The Children’s Hospital.

Robotic Capsule Endoscope (RCE)

 

This project focuses on a developing a mobile robotic capsule endoscope (RCE) for exploration of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Schoen in the Department of Surgery at CU-Anschutz, Dr. Donald Kirkpatrick at Denver Health, Dr. Xiaoli Zhang in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines and Dr. Hao Zhang in the Department of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines.

Pain Quantification

 

This project focuses on accurately measuring patient pain response to computer controlled pressure stimuli. This project is in collaboration with Drs. Vikas Patel and Emily Lindley in the Department of Orthopedics at CU-Anschutz.

Boutonniere Brace

 

This project focused on developing a novel brace for treatment of boutonniere deformities.  Design goals included integrating heat and massage therapy into a brace that provides improved comfort, blood circulation, and no pinch points.

Tissue Fusion

 

This project focuses on exploring heating/pressure gradients in electrocautery with a focus on design optimization for tissue fusion. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Virginia Ferguson, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CU-Boulder, and is sponsored by Conmed Electrosurgery.

NSF Surface Micro-Patterning

 

The research objective of this NSF funded research project is to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms that are responsible for contact, adhesion, and friction interactions between micro-patterned surfaces and soft fluid-coated substrates. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Kurt Maute in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at CU-Boulder.

 

Intraoperative Tissue Palpation

 

This project focuses on intraoperative wireless palpation.  This project is in collaboration with Dr. Pietro Valdastri, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Vanderbilt University.

NSF Cognitive Ethnographies of Engineering Design (CEED)

 

The objective of this EArly-concept Grant for  Exploratory Research (EAGER) project is to how professional practices relate to nominally similar practices  in university engineering classes, and how any continuities and discontinuities between work and school might inform efforts to design engineering classes. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Kevin O’Connor in School of Education at CU-Boulder and Dr. Daria Kotys-Schwartz in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CU-Boulder.

NSF 3D Micromechanics of Adhesion and Friction

 

The research objective of this NSF funded research project is to acquire direct experimental data on the 3D deformation of soft gel substrates in contact with micro-pillar arrays, to establish connection between the micromechanical events in the soft substrate and the global adhesion and friction response, and to determine appropriate interface models for individual pillars which will used in a comprehensive finite element model for design and optimization purpose. This project is in collaboration with Dr. Rong Long in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CU-Boulder.
