What's new at MASP?
MASP Changes its Name: Miramontes Arts & Sciences Program
Professor Ofelia Miramontes was a tireless advocate for providing educational opportunities to those who lacked them. As child, Ofelia had never imagined herself attending college. Being a bilingual, first generation college student from a traditionally underrepresented community, it took time for her to understand opportunities and talents she had available to her. As she progressed through her education, she came to understand how important it was for others like her to be encouraged in their educational goals. She devoted herself to provide such access for bilingual students, first generation college students and traditionally underrepresented students.
In addition to her educational mission, Dr. Miramontes also felt passionately that stressing academic excellence would work best when paired with a supportive community of scholars. In such an environment, academic excellence enriches and strengthens not just one person but an entire community. This stronger community, in turn serves as a source of support for its students. Early on she recognized our program as also working toward this vision of itself as an academic community and became its advocate as well. As the founder of the CU Leadership Excellence Achievement Diversity (LEAD) Alliance, Dr. Miramontes continued promoting this melding of the pursuit of academic excellence through the building of an engaged academic community.
It is with great pride that we now honor Dr. Ofelia Miramontes, with the support of her husband, Bill Barclay, in re-naming our program for her. As her legacy, we wish this public expression to be a fitting tribute for her as we continue to build on the success of our program.
