About this Map
On a campus as large as the University of Colorado Boulder, visitors, employees, and students require a well designed map for navigation and wayfinding. Towards this purpose, the new campus map was created. The interactive nature of a web format enables the design to be more dynamic, and provides a richer user experience than that of a static paper map or pdf.
The new map and website were developed by a team of CU-Boulder students for a WRTG-3035 course, in spring of 2013. The team consisted of Louis Dankovich, Erik Kierstead, Derek Kniffin, Christian Ortiz, and Zach Pierce.
The intention of this project was to replace and upgrade the existing campus map web application (currently found here). As seen in the screenshot, the existing application was outdated and fairly crude by today's standards. It behaved poorly with smartphones, and had a fairly clunky user interface. Minimal information was provided regarding parking, footpaths, building amenities or which roads and buildings were open at a given time. Worst of all: it was also often out of date and did not contain information on construction and changes to campus.
By utilizing OpenStreetMap (OSM) (an open-data mapping platform) we hope to overcome many of these problems. The end user interfaces of OSM are similar to that of Google Maps, and it offers similar capabilities in regards to routing, as well as providing dedicated smartphone apps. In addition, it also often provides filters which allow a user to hone in on specific "layers" of interest such as footpaths, buildings or parking. Best of all, it allows for crowdsourced updating in a manner similar to Wikipedia, which allows the map to change with the campus.
Over the course of the semester we have pulled data from a number of sources including existing campus resources, GPS tracks, and aerial imagery to generate a far more accurate and reliable map than the previously existing version. This map provides numerous features that were hard or impossible to find elsewhere. Some of the features are:
- Accurate Streets
- Dining facilities
- Bus Routes
- Bicycle Parking
- Emergency Telephones
