Language is both something that we do and
something that we have. By studying
language, the subject matter of linguistics,
we study what makes us human—the
physical capacities and motor routines
that we use to produce speech and gesture,
the visual and auditory capacities that
we use to perceive language, the cognitive
capacities that we use to encode and
construct meaning, the imaginative capacity
that we display when we use language
in creative ways, and the social and
cultural identities that we express through
language. If you are interested in pursuing
an undergraduate degree in Linguistics
at the University of Colorado at Boulder, visit the Linguistics Major section to learn about career opportunities for those with linguistics training, requirements for the major and minor degrees, writing an honors thesis in Linguistics, the BA/MA degree in Linguistics and the application process.
