Graduate Study in Linguistics

Graduate students in the Department may choose to specialize in any of the following areas:

The Department offers both the Master's (MA) degree and the Doctorate (PhD) degree. Students working toward the MA degree have the opportunity to earn the Human Language Technology (HLT) certificate. MA students can also earn the Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science. In addition, the Department offers a Master's Degree in Linguistics for TESOL professionals.

The PhD program allows a wide range of specializations and offers the following tracks:

• The Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science
• The joint PhD in Linguistics and Cognitive Science

Both PhD and MA students with research interests in sociocultural linguistics have the opportunity to earn a graduate certificate in Culture, Language and Social Practice.

The Department has graduated approximately 30 doctoral students in the last 10 years; of these, 80% hold academic or industry positions related to their doctoral training.

The Colorado Linguistics graduate program has recently been selected for inclusion in the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP). Through the WRGP, graduate students who are residents of 15 participating states may enroll in select programs at public institutions like Colorado Linguistics on an in-state resident tuition basis. The following states currently participate in the WRGP: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. If you are currently a non-resident of Colorado, believe you are eligible and would like to apply for the WRGP benefit, answer 'yes' to the WRGP question in the Supplemental Information section of the online application, or contact Sally Ingraham, Tuition Classification Officer, in the Registar's office.
