Dr. Chase Wesley Raymond has joined the Departments of Linguistics and Spanish and Portuguese as an Assistant Professor, where he will also be a core faculty member in the Program in Culture, Language, and Social Practice (CLASP). 
Dr. Raymond holds doctorate degrees in both Hispanic Linguistics (2014) and Sociology (2016) from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to coming to CU-Boulder, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen.
Professor Raymond's research is interdisciplinary, centering on the use of language in everyday life. For him, the study of language provides the means through which the moment-by-moment 'doing' of social life is accomplished and can be systematically investigated. He is particularly interested in situations of contact—when divergent languages, dialects, cultures, etc. come together in interaction—with a primary focus on Spanish speakers in the United States. He brings together methods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, and Sociolinguistics to investigate language use in both institutional and non-institutional contexts, routinely linking interactional practices to larger themes, including questions of race/ethnicity, individual/group identity and culture, and relations with social institutions. His work has appeared in a disciplinarily diverse set of journals which range from Linguistics (e.g., Language, Language in Society, Journal of Sociolinguistics), to Communication Studies (e.g., Research on Language and Social Interaction, Discourse & Communication), to Healthcare (e.g., Patient Education and Counseling).
