The Siouan Archives were prepared in ...-..., before the Center existed, in a project
headed by David Rood and Allan Taylor. They were intended at the time to represent a
computerized archive of all available primary materials on the Siouan languages. The
intention was to create computer readable versions of all these documents. Siouan is
a small language family and sadly underdocumented, but even so David and Allan were
perhaps a bit ambitious. A few things didn't get computer formatted and proof
reading is still in progress, though most of the unkeyed references are available in the
Library. What was computer archived was put into a format conceived for a Control
Data Corporation 6000 series system, c. 197?. This system had a 64 glyph character
system, which called for some ingenuity in encoding. Over the years some of this
material has been updated and we even make parts of it available on the Web. We
are presently engaged in a project to make the whole
of the Archives available in a contemporary format.
